2009 Books I Hope To Read Soon

What follows are books published in 2009 that I have not yet read, but based upon consistently good reviews and many “best of” lists, hope to soon:

Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn
Vignettes on women activists in Africa, India and China. I’ll listen to this one today on my way to my daughter-in-law’s baby shower!

The Devil's Alphabet by Daryl Gregory
Subtle, eerie present-day horror novel of a man returning to his smalltown birthplace, where the familiar folks have become strange creatures. Sounds juicy!

Cheever: A Life by Blake Bailey
Highly praised life story of Pulitzer Prize winning author John Cheever - know as “the Chekhov of the suburbs.” On every 2009 best of list out there.

The Kids Are Alright by Diana, Liz, Amanda and Dan Welch
Four siblings tell their story of their youth after the death of mom and dad. I’ve heard that their conflicting takes on what happened how is interesting.

A New Literary History of America by Greil Marcus and Werner Sollors
A magnificent, vast, inquisitive, richly surprising and consistently enlightening wallow in our national history and culture. A different history. Hmmmm.

Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City by Greg Grandin
Henry Ford's folly: an idealized American town in the Amazon jungle alongside a rubber plantation. Crazy enough to get my attention.

Where Men Win Glory: The Odyssey of Pat Tillman by Jon Krakauer
Football star turned army Ranger - victim of lethal friendly fire and a cynical government coverup. I’m curious.
